[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Game of Thrones ahead.]
-
Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has revealed his hopes for his character Jaime Lannister in season 8. After last night’s chilling season 7 finale, titled ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’, fans finally got the satisfaction of seeing Jaime finally have enough of his sister/lover Queen Cersei’s (Lena Headey) lust for power above all else and leave King’s Landing just as winter arrives.
This leaves us wondering what’s in store for the Kingslayer in Game of Thrones season 8 (aka. the show’s final season), now that Cersei has revealed to Jaime that her commitment to join in the fight against the dead was nothing but lies. Jaime left both the mother of his unborn child and his Queen behind him as he headed North to help in the Great War - the continuation of the redemption arc we have been waiting for since Jaime returned to King’s Landing some seasons ago, short of one hand.
In a new interview with Indiewire, Coster-Waldau discussed what he hopes is next for his character when season 8 and the army of the dead arrives. One of the biggest things Coster-Waldau is excited about as his character joins in the fight for the living, is the chance to take down some white walkers with his Valyrian steel blade:
“Obviously I’d want to be involved in this battle somehow. Jaime will be well-prepared since he’s one of the few who wields a Valyrian steel blade. He’s got the right sword for the fight. He has a Valyrian steel sword, which is very effective. I think now he knows that he has one, Brienne of Tarth has one, Jon Snow has one, and Samwell Tarly has one. And of course Arya has a Valyrian steel dagger. I think it’ll be great to use that and fight some of those disgusting beings.”
Coster-Waldau also added that he wants a reunion between Jaime and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), the young Stark he pushed out of that window and crippled in order to keep his and Cersei’s incestuous relationship a secret, way back in the first episode of Game of Thrones. He also mentioned that he would like to see at least one more scene between Jaime and Cersei before the series concludes:
In order for Jaime’s redemption arc to come full circle it would make sense for him to apologize to Bran for pushed him out that window and the calamity that came with it - though, considering Bran’s newfound awkwardness that comes with being the Three-Eyed Raven, Bran might even wind up thanking Jaime for all he’s done in helping him get on the path that he’s now on.
“My hope is that I’d like him to meet Bran and I’d like him to apologize to Bran Stark because that wasn’t a nice thing he did in Episode 1 [shoving him out the tower window]… And obviously I hope there’s some kind of scene again with Jaime and Cersei because that is the main relationship. I hope that they get to have one face-to-face before we end the show, but who knows.”
Game of Thrones season 8 premieres in either 2018 or 2019.
