New Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 fan art puts Jake Gyllenhaal in the Mysterio suit. Even though he said a lingering goodbye in Avengers: Infinity War, Peter Parker will still be back for the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the character’s smash-hit first MCU standalone. Opposing Parker for the sequel will be the villain Mysterio, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal.

In Marvel Comics lore, Mysterio is the supervillain alter-ego of Quentin Beck, a special effects wizard and stunt man who grows disillusioned with Hollywood and decides to use his expertise for evil ends. Though not blessed with superhuman abilities like his eventual nemesis Spider-Man, Mysterio does make use of hypnotism and magic to help beguile and confuse his victims, while also using his robotics knowledge to craft a distinctive super-suit.

Since the announcement that Gyllenhaal will tackle the character of Mysterio in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, fans have taken up the challenge of crafting art that imagines what the actor will look like inside the suit. A new piece of fan art from spdrmnkyxxiii imagines Gyllenhaal as a very creepy version of the character who looks like he could easily hypnotize someone through the screen using his silvery-blue eyes. See the art below:

There’s clearly a lot of excitement among Spider-Man fans over the casting of Gyllenhaal as Mysterio. The MCU generally hasn’t done well with villains, notwithstanding the presence of Thanos as the biggest bad of all. But the Spider-Man books are widely regarded as a treasure trove of bad guys and hopes are high that many of them will make their way into the movies in forms that do justice to the originals. Of course, the original Homecoming already gave fans a memorable version of Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. And Keaton reportedly will return in Homecoming 2 for a second go-around as Vulture.

After Keaton delivered as Vulture, Gyllenhaal hopes to keep the streak of strong MCU Spider-Man villains alive. This after pre-MCU Spider-Man movies proved to be somewhat of a mixed bag villain-wise. Audiences, for example, loved Alfred Molina as Doctor Ock in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, but were less enthusiastic about Topher Grace’s Venom in Spider-Man 3. Of course, the Symbiote himself will get his own non-MCU movie when Tom Hardy tackles the character in Venom.

It will be interesting to see how the character of Mysterio is handled in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. One arguable strength of Homecoming was that Keaton’s Vulture was depicted more-or-less realistically, at least relative to other more cartoonish and over-the-top movie versions of Spider-Man bad guys. Many argued Homecoming was helped by giving Vulture believable motivations, instead of having him just be a standard all-powerful comic book supervillain.
