Additional plot details for Bond 25 allude to the return of two actors who’ve previously played characters in the James Bond movie franchise. It might not have a title just yet, but the next Bond film (the twenty-fifth overall, as its working title implies) has finally entered production, nearly three and a half years after 007’s last adventure, Spectre, was released in theaters. Daniel Craig is returning to play the super secret-agent for the - reportedly - final time, having already portrayed the character on four separate occasions over the last thirteen years (beginning with Casino Royale in 2006).
According to the newly-released Bond 25 synopsis, the film picks up with James having left active duty and spending his downtime in Jamaica with, presumably, Dr. Madeleine Swann (whom he was seen driving off with at the end of Spectre). Léa Seydoux is confirmed to be reprising her role as Dr. Swann in the movie, and is joined in the cast by her Spectre costars Ralph Fiennes as the new M, Ben Whishaw as the Q to Craig’s Bond, and Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny. It’s also been announced that, as previously reported, Rami Malek will be playing the film’s main villain, as the followup to his Oscar-winning turn in Bohemian Rhapsody.
So far, however, there haven’t been any official announcements concerning Christoph Waltz and whether he will or will not reprise his version of the diabolical Ernst Stavro Blofeld from Spectre. According to Page Six, Waltz is, in fact, slated to make a brief return as Blofeld in Bond 25, but with Malek’s character still serving as the movie’s primary antagonist. Meanwhile, Grace Jones - who famously played May Day in the 1985 Bond film A View To a Kill - is also reportedly going to cameo in Bond 25, though most likely not as her previous Bond movie character (who was killed during her prior appearance).
While Waltz said he wouldn’t be reprising Blofeld for Bond 25 back in 2017, a whole lot’s changed about the film and its production team since then. It’s not hard to imagine writer-director Cary Fukunaga (who boarded the movie after Danny Boyle’s departure) wanting to bring Waltz’s version of the character back for another appearance, either. After all, Spectre not only revealed that he and James had grown up together, but that Blofeld was the orchestrator behind most of the pain and suffering that Craig’s 007 endured in his previous three films. With Bond 25 aiming to bring Craig’s run on the series to a proper end, the logical thing to do would be to have Blofeld return in some capacity to further tie everything together, if only for a single scene.
As for Jones: it sounds like her cameo will basically amount a fun callback to the Bond franchise’s past, nothing more or less. It won’t be the only easter egg to watch out for in Bond 25 either, by the sound of it. In fact, the movie literally begins in Jamaica as a shout-out to James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s famous Jamaican villa, GoldenEye. Craig’s previous Bond films have all had their fair share of nods and homages to iconic elements of the James Bond adventures before them, so it seems fitting that the tradition will continue with his final time playing the role.
