James Gunn congratulated the makers of Deadpool 2 for its early success with an adorable Groot-Deadpool crossover. Of course, the Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director isn’t leaving the Marvel Studios banner any time soon, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due out in 2020. And beloved fan favorite Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) still has plenty of growing to do, himself, after sprouting in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and appearing as an angst-y teenager in Avengers: Infinity War.

Gunn has consistently been gracious and supportive of his fellow filmmakers bringing Marvel characters to life. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch and co-writers Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Ryan Reynolds, who also stars in the title role, are the latest to draw congratulatory reactions, now that the highly anticipated sequel is taking off at the box office in its opening weekend. So, naturally, Gunn took to Twitter to commend them on the movie’s accomplishments.

James Gunn posted a quick message of “enormous congrats” on Twitter to Deadpool 2’s cast and crew on the film’s early success, both critically and commercially. He lauds the sequel for bringing in over $130 million at the box office, although the film earned an estimated $125 million domestically over the weekend. Despite that minor discrepancy, the movie has raked in over $301 million worldwide already, thus setting a new international box office record for an R-rated film. Either way, Gunn is clearly happy for his contemporaries, who he’s congratulated with a drawing of Baby Groot dressed as the Merc with a Mouth. Meet Groot-pool:

Reynolds has yet to respond to Gunn’s tweet as of Sunday afternoon, but he did respond to a Warner Bros. tweet about Green Lantern in a rare social media reference to his failed former superhero vehicle. The Deadpool franchise has been a far different story, with Deadpool 2 nabbing the second-biggest domestic opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie - behind only its predecessor.

This is far from the first time that Gunn complimented the success of another superhero movie. He didn’t formally congratulate the Russo brothers for the success of Infinity War, but he did say the movie was simply “incredible” after an early screening. The hope now is that Groot and Deadpool can have a real crossover in a future movie, since 20th Century Fox could eventually fall under Disney’s umbrella. The latter and the Guardians of the Galaxy do seem like a natural fit.

Still, as perfect as such a collaboration would be, it’s still far off… if it ever happens. For now, audiences have Deadpool 2 to experience on the big screen and an X-Force movie to look forward to, which is progressing smoothly behind the scenes.
