Director James Gunn explains why Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still without a release date. Gunn helped introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 and also directed the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in 2017. Despite both films getting generally positive reviews, as well as earning a lot of money at the box office, the series has yet to get a third film.

Gunn revealed as early as 2014 that he had plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Unfortunately, the film was put on the backburner after Disney fired Gunn due to old offensive tweets that had surfaced. There were rumors of several directors being considered to replace Gunn, but it was also reported that Disney didn’t really actively search for a replacement. Then, all of the drama came to an end in March when Disney rehired Gunn for the project. Kevin Fiege recently confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still on the way, but the film wasn’t given a release date at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, Gunn has shed some light onto why that is.

Gunn gave a reason behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 not getting a release date at SDCC after responding to a fan on Twitter. Gunn revealed that while the film was still on the way, he has to finish The Suicide Squad before he can go back to Marvel. Gunn’s full tweet can be read below:

At the beginning of the year, Gunn was hired by DC to direct The Suicide Squad. It still isn’t known if The Suicide Squad will be a sequel or a reboot, but the film will feature a mostly new cast with new characters. While characters like Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) are returning for the film, there’s a slew of new villains The Suicide Squad might feature. Also, despite Will Smith’s character Deadshot having a big role in the first film, Floyd Lawton won’t be returning for the next movie.

With Marvel being present at San Diego Comic-Con, people were likely hoping to get more information on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it makes sense that Marvel wouldn’t have a release date yet. Marvel announced several release dates for new Marvel movies and TV shows at SDCC, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wasn’t on their list. Gunn has revealed before that he won’t rush The Suicide Squad to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and since he was already hired by DC before Disney rehired him, his reasoning seems more than fair.
