James Gunn has revealed his deleted cameo from blockbuster sequel Pacific Rim Uprising. The Pacific Rim franchise has sold itself on the beautifully simple concept of huge robots punching giant monsters, and while neither film has earned rave reviews, their mixture of spectacle and cheesy melodrama have earned them a fanbase.

Pacific Rim Uprising features a few key changes from the original, with Steven S. DeKnight replacing Guillermo del Toro in the director’s chair, and John Boyega taking over as leading man. Uprising is the film that managed to finally dethrone Black Panther from the number one spot after a five-one week run and has pulled in healthy box-office numbers worldwide. The original film actually underperformed in the U.S., but strong numbers overseas eventually led to the sequel being greenlit.

Now director James Gunn (Guardians Of The Galaxy) has revealed he shot a cameo for Pacific Rim: Uprising, but it got nixed from the released version. Gunn played a DJ in the deleted scene, meaning he more than likely appeared in the opening party that introduces viewers to Boyega’s Jake Pentecost.

Since the above scene is featured in a montage with no dialogue, DeKnight likely removed Gunn’s appearance because it didn’t fit. Before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn was best known as the screenwriter for movies like Dawn Of The Dead (2004) and Scooby-Doo. Guardians Of The Galaxy was considered something of a risk for Marvel when it was announced, but thanks to Gunn’s balance of character, humor and action, the movie became one of the MCU’s most acclaimed to date. Gunn is currently in on pre-production for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3. Fans recently got excited when it was suggested Mark Hamill could make an appearance in the sequel, but for now, that’s just a hopeful rumor.

While Pacific Rim: Uprising is doing healthy business, time will tell if it becomes a full-blown franchise. The movie ends on a note that easily lends itself to another entry, with DeKnight revealing he has an idea for a third movie that would connect to Legendary’s MonsterVerse. This shared universe features famous Kaiju monsters like Godzilla and King Kong, so it seems only natural Pacific Rim should get in on the fun.

That remains to be seen though, as Legendary has proved shy about connecting Pacific Rim: Uprising to the MonsterVerse, and for the time being, appear to want to keep the franchises separate.
