Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn are both agreeable to a crossover between the two franchises. The two briefly discussed the matter on Twitter, following Gunn’s comments on Deadpool 2.
The long-awaited sequel to the surprise smash-hit superhero action/comedy - which Fox was famously reluctant to make - has followed in the footsteps of its predecessor in the two weeks since its release. Deadpool 2 has already broken the record for R-rated film-earnings in an opening weekend overseas and come second only to the original Deadpool in domestic earnings for the opening weekend of an R-rated movie. The film has also become a critical success, earning an A-ranking from Cinemascore.
Not surprisingly Gunn, who wrote about having finally seen Deadpool 2 on his Twitter account, enjoyed the film immensely. Reynolds thanked Gunn for his thumbs-up and suggested a crossover between their respective film franchises. Gunn replied in affirmative:
Sadly, the making of such a crossover would prove far more complicated than two filmmakers famed for their love of comic books simply agreeing that such a movie would be awesome on social media. Even with The Walt Disney Corporation in the process of buying 20th Century Fox Studios (including the film rights to all the Marvel Comics characters currently optioned by Fox), Marvel Studios has been slow in making plans to officially introduce The X-Men and Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This hasn’t stopped the Deadpool films from dropping a series of subtle hints suggesting they are in the same universe, but nothing has been confirmed.
One possibility that bears exploration is bringing Gunn in to direct a future Deadpool movie. Gunn’s work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has proven his bona fides to direct a superhero film that balances high action and dark comedy. Before that, Gunn wrote and directed the 2010 independent film Super, which starred Rainn Wilson as a man who became a costumed vigilante in a desperate bid to bring order to his life. Gunn also wrote, directed and acted in The Specials - a decidedly dark comedy about the world’s sixth or seventh best superhero team - which became something of a cult-classic even before Gunn found greater fame and prestige with his work for Marvel Studios.
For now, this scenario seems just as unlikely given Gunn’s busy schedule working on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and assisting with the production of Avengers 4. Then again, given how long it may take for the Disney/Fox merger to finally be solidified, Gunn may be free just in time for an official Deadpool crossover movie in the future. Fans of both series may be able to hope for brief cameos, at the very least, even if the world is not yet ready for Deadpool 3 - Deadpool In Space!
