James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will reportedly begin filming this September in Atlanta. Over the last year, Marvel and DC’s cinematic universes received major shakeups thanks to Gunn. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was set back when Disney fired Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the project only recently recovered when he was rehired. But after Disney’s initial decision, Warner Bros. and DC courted Gunn and found a sequel to Suicide Squad to be a perfect pairing. Even though he got his original superhero movie franchise back, Gunn is sticking with Suicide Squad 2 as well.

Since he joined the project, there have been plenty of updates on what it could be and who may star in it. One of the most confusing aspects is the insistence that The Suicide Squad is not a sequel while also sort of being a sequel since it will feature some of the same characters. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is the biggest returnee and Gunn has also stacked the cast with newcomers, including Idris Elba. Plot details are still a secret, but new information could arrive soon.

According to The GWW, Gunn is planning to begin filming The Suicide Squad in Atlanta on September 23rd. A fall start to production has previously been reported, but this appears to be the scheduled start date. However, filming could begin before this date if there are any other locations that the production is going to visit. In any case, the site reports that production will wrap on January 31, 2020.

If cameras do start rolling at the end of September and finish at the end of January, Gunn will have four months to complete principal photography on The Suicide Squad. It is unlikely this will be the entire length of production though, as additional photography will take place at a later point in time. Regardless, this start date should give everyone a general understanding of when more information on the movie could come.

The oddest part of this schedule for The Suicide Squad, though, is how early the start is as compared to the film’s release date. WB previously set the film for an August 2021 release, but it should be done well before that. Gunn has plenty of experience helming giant blockbusters through all of production and post-production in roughly a year. If he operates The Suicide Squad on a similar schedule, the movie will be ready to be released next fall.

In this case, WB could decide to move the movie up by a fair amount or possibly sit on the completed product for an extended time. If they do move it up, then fans will be even happier to get Gunn’s The Suicide Squad sooner, while holding onto it could give him even more time to perfect it. But, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also looming, Gunn could be pushing to complete work here in order to finish his Marvel trilogy promptly.
