Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be “very different” from its predecessors, director/writer James Gunn teases. The movie may not have a confirmed date yet (although rumor has it that it will take the May 2020 Marvel spot), but it has already starting to generate interest from Marvel fans especially considering that after Avengers: Infinity War, Rocket Raccoon and Nebula are the only remaining members of the team to be alive. That said, people can expect that most, if not all, of the members of the cosmic team will eventually be resurrected come Avengers 4.
Several actors including Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista have confirmed that they’re returning to reprise their respective roles - Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Mantis and Drax the Destroyer - in next year’s untitled Avengers, as well as Guardians 3. While it’s still a mystery how they’ll all return from the dead after they were snuffed out of existence due to Thanos’ snap, Gunn is already plotting their next adventure as an independent team.
The Marvel director took it to his official Facebook account to offer an update regarding his ongoing work in writing the story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And while he didn’t reveal any narrative specifics about the film, he reiterated that threequel will be unlike the first two films from the MCU sub-franchise. Whether Gunn means different in tone or cast characters remains to be seen, but Gunn sounds pretty optimistic about what he’s working on saying: “It’s very, very, very different. Very different, but I won’t say how! You’ll have to wait to see the movie, it’s a long time away.”
Of course, one of the possible ways for Guardians 3 to look drastically different from its predecessors is if any Fox Marvel character pops in joins everybody’s favorite cosmic heroes. But before the theory even caught fire, the filmmaker quickly shot it down saying: “Not gonna happen in any major way. Too far along.” It’s actually not the first time that Gunn pointed out that the possibility of mutants or the Fantastic Four popping in the MCU won’t be any time soon - the same sentiments that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had when asked about the matter. However, with how quickly MCU was able to incorporate Spider-Man into the franchise setting a precedent, it’s not that difficult to theorize that the currently Fox-managed characters will make their MCU debut sooner rather than later.
By the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rolls out, it’s not just going to be the cosmic-based franchise will look different. If anything, the whole cinematic franchise will be very different as previously teased by Gunn. Avengers 4 is set to wrap up a 22-film narrative that the MCU has been treading since 2008’s Iron Man. And while the superhero film series shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, next year’s ensemble movie will close out the current chapter of the MCU, paving the way for a brand new one to begin.
