James Gunn has debunked a theory involving the Soul Stone, Avengers: Infinity War, and the tease of Adam Warlock during one of the mid-credits scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Marvel has plenty of major characters that have yet to appear in the MCU; ranging from Wonder Man and Moon Knight to a whole lot of heroes/villains from the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man comic books. For many fans, however, few characters are as high as Adam Warlock on that wish list.

Guardians of the Galaxy teased the character’s signature cocoon before Vol. 2 flat out put the spotlight on it during one of its many mid-credits scenes. That along with the introduction of Ayesha - the female opposite to Warlock in the comics - suggests that Warlock will soon be appearing in the MCU. While Adam Warlock won’t be in Avengers: Infinity War, he played a key role in the comic book version of that storyline. That, in turn, gave rise to a fan theory about the MCU’s Soul Stone that has now been dismissed.

Gunn had a fan suggest to him that the embryonic Adam Warlock teased in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 already has the Soul Stone, thus setting up the character to make his grand entrance in the MCU during Infinity War. The filmmaker was quick to shoot the idea down though, essentially confirming that Warlock won’t be appearing in the movie in any form (see the exchange below).

In the comics, Warlock is a perfect being known as Him before he sets off on his journey to become a superhero. That involves him being gifted the Soul Stone, only to learn it slowly corrupts him in the future and turns him into the evil Magus. Warlock and Magus have been deeply tied to the Soul Stone ever since on the page, so it makes sense the character would be tied to the gem in the MCU. The Soul Stone is unaccounted for at the moment, and Infinity War is expected to finally reveal its location. However, that doesn’t mean Warlock will be showing up when that happens..

Despite the tease during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn says Warlock isn’t guaranteed for Vol. 3. What’s more, given how many characters are set to appear in either Avengers: Infinity War and/or Avengers 4, there simply isn’t much room (if any) for the celestial superhero to make his MCU debut in those films. That said, the Soul Stone is important to Warlock, so there’s a good chance it will eventually play a role in the character’s life on the big screen too.
