Glass star James McAvoy says he would be interested in making sequels to the upcoming film. Last year’s Split was more than just a triumphant comeback for director M. Night Shyamalan; it surprised everyone with a twist revealing it was set in the same universe as Shyamalan’s fan-favorite superhero film, Unbreakable. Very quickly, Glass came together, with Unbreakable stars Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson joining McAvoy. For the first time in a while, viewers are eagerly anticipating the arrival of a Shyamalan film, having spent years clamoring for a proper Unbreakable followup.

When Glass arrives in theaters next January, it will close out an unlikely trilogy Shyamalan spent 19 years making. Of course, the trilogy model of franchise building is arguably antiquated in the age of the shared universe, and anything (particularly a property such as this) has the potential to expand. McAvoy is hoping he gets that chance.

While speaking with EW to promote Glass ahead of its San Diego Comic-Con panel, the actor spoke about the possibility of other sequels:

For his part, Shyamalan seems content to let the “Unsplittable” (McAvoy’s term) series rest at three, telling the outlet he prefers to make “new things.” The director has two original ideas he’s keen on developing once Glass is completed, so it’ll be interesting to see what becomes of those. Honestly, there are many similarities between Shyamalan’s handling of the Unbreakable franchise and Brad Bird’s approach to The Incredibles. He’s not going to produce another installment just for the sake of a cash grab. There has to be a solid story in place that interests Shyamalan as an artist and connects with an audience. It took him nearly two decades to revisit David Dunn and Mr. Glass, so he’s not one to rush anything. He didn’t entirely shut the door on another installment, but it’s not his top priority.

“I can’t speak for Night. I would like there to be more. I think there’s definitely the potential for more in terms of the roles that he’s created and the rationalization for what a superhero or villain is. There’s definitely room for more. But in terms of whether he would feel as fresh, I don’t know.”

In the meantime, Glass is sure to have plenty of people buzzing during Comic-Con. Marketing is getting underway, as the first poster and official images were recently released. It’s all but a guarantee the Hall H crowd (and possibly the general public) will be treated to a sizzle reel/teaser trailer and get a real good taste of what Shyamalan and company have in store. The director has already received “gracious” responses from those who have seen footage, so hopefully fans feel the same way when they get a look.
