Jane Krakowski, the actress who portrayed mesmerizingly narcissistic actress Jenna Maroney in all seven seasons of 30 Rock, is getting fans’ hopes up with the prospect of a series revival at some point in the future. The original NBC sitcom aired its final episode in January 2013 after 138 episodes, and it’s generally considered one of the greatest comedy shows (and shrewdly surreal satires) in the history of television. The secret of the show’s success had everything to do with the chemistry of its gifted ensemble, which included Alec Baldwin (as Lorne Michaels stand-in Jack Donaghy), Tracy Morgan (as certifiably insane actor Tracy Jordan), Jack McBrayer (cloyingly eager-to-please NBC page Kenneth Parcell) and, of course, Tina Fey as one Elizabeth Miervaldis Lemon, the assertively neurotic creator/writer of sketch comedy shows The Girlie Show and TGS with Tracy Jordan.
Now, five years after the final episode of 30 Rock aired, television execs are overzealous to reboot old properties in the hope of recapturing the popularity of freshly-exhumed properties like ABC’s Roseanne and NBC’s Will & Grace, both of which have been been hugely popular for their respective networks in their latest incarnations. (In fact, they’ve both been renewed for another season.) Last August, we reported that NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt would revive 30 Rock “in a heartbeat” if Fey happened to pick up her smartphone and speed-dial him, even if the show only returned for a limited run. (He said he’d be more than pleased to revive The Office, too.) Now, based on comments Krakowski made at the opening of Tina Fey’s Broadway musical adaptation of Mean Girls on Sunday, April 8, the actress is also very eager to get the old gang back together to throw on some fake beards and Princess Leia costumes for a victory lap.
“[A revival] would be a dream come true,” she told THR this past weekend, perhaps letting nostalgia get the better of her: “We all had the greatest time on that show.” And while talk of a 30 Rock reboot is just so much wishful thinking right now, Krakowski does spill a bit of tea for fans, revealing that “there’s definitely been talk and conversations” between some of the show’s key players.
Calling the show “probably the best experience we’re ever going to have in our careers,” Krakowski further admitted that she’s quite curious what antics Jen Maroney might be up to in 2018. “Right now, [reboots are] the trend … And I would be thrilled if the trend continued over into 30 Rock.”
For now, all any of us can do is sit back and wait for Tina Fey to do the right thing, fulfill her destiny, and revive 30 Rock for another seven seasons. In the meantime, there’s always those two other shows in the Tina Fey empire to pass the time: the “cult” comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and workplace satire Great News are both here for you, and there’s certainly some consolation in that, isn’t there?
