Warning! Major SPOILERS ahead for Jane The Virgin season 5’s finale.

Jane the Virgin’s fifth season has come to a close, but what can fans expect from season 6? The critically-acclaimed The CW series, which stars Gina Rodriguez in the title role, wrapped-up its most recent run with a two-part finale that took the telenovela to the 100-episode mark.

Jane the Virgin centers around Jane Villaneuva, a 23-year-old Latina virgin who falls pregnant after being accidentally artificially inseminated by her gynecologist, following her life and romantic endeavors from then on. The season 5 finale wrapped-up a number of major storylines and mysteries, with Jane marrying long-time love interest Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni), and the series’ narrator revealed to be an adult version of their son, Mateo (voiced by Anthony Mendez).

With Jane the Virgin’s two-part season 5 finale, “Chapter 99” and “Chapter 100”, giving Jane a sense of closure and a happy ending, should fans be looking forward to the story continuing with Jane the Virgin season 6?

Jane The Virgin Season 6 Isn’t Happening

With Jane the Virgin’s season 5 finale paying off a number of long-running storylines and character arcs, including Jane and Rafael’s romance, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to fans to learn that “Chapter 100” was actually Jane the Virgin’s series finale, and that season 6 won’t be happening. Despite lots of praise from critics and a Golden Globe in its first season, Jane the Virgin has never been a big ratings hit for The CW, so it’s done well to last five seasons.

Although Jane the Virgin wasn’t officially canceled, it was announced ahead of time that season 5 would be its last. When The CW renewed Jane the Virgin for a fifth season back in April 2018, it was with the caveat that it would be the final season of the show, giving it a chance to go out on its own terms and conclude its story properly.

What Jane The Virgin Season 6’s Story Could’ve Been About

Since Jane the Virgin season 5 was designed to be its last, it was able to wrap-up its biggest and most important plotlines by the time of its series finale, allowing a sense of closure for fans. With Jane and Rafael now married, then season 6 could have followed the couple as they adjust to life as newlyweds, and perhaps expanding their family.

However, if Jane the Virgin had gone into season 5 either not knowing it was going to be the end, or with a season 6 renewal already guaranteed, then it likely would’ve saved some plot points for season 6. It’s likely that the big wedding was always planned as the happy ending for Jane, so that could’ve been pushed back, while it might’ve explored more of Michael’s surprising return too. As it is, Jane the Virgin’s story has ended in a satisfying, heartfelt manner, and there won’t be a season 6, although a spin-off is in the works.
