Whether or not you were one of the many who checked out Super Bowl 50 solely for the latest trailers and film related TV spots, by now certain truths about upcoming releases are widely known. One of these truths is that the next installment of the Bourne franchise will break the familiar titular mould of its four predecessors - and simply be called Jason Bourne.
Since stepping away from the series after 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum, Matt Damon’s return to the role of Jason Bourne had been issue number one for – let’s face it – almost every fan of the franchise in existence. This stance grew even stronger for many after Jeremy Renner did his best in the Damon-less Bourne Legacy in 2012. Now that Damon is back and joined by The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass, Jason Bourne’s Super Bowl teaser trailer could rightfully be considered the beginning of a high octane lead up to the film’s release in July.
So far things are looking quite promising indeed for Bourne fans - and as Matt Damon told EW in an interview, Jason Bourne will feel much more like a continuation of the first three Bourne films than an independent addition to the franchise.

This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It’s part of the first three [movies], it’s not a whole new chapter. It feels like the conclusion, even though we’re not saying it’s the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically.
Jason Bourne will see the addition of Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) to the cast, as well as the return of Julia Stiles – who previously starred alongside Damon in the first three Bourne films. As he spoke about Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander joining Jason Bourne, Damon explained what a big part casting plays in the series.
Damon also had much praise for director Paul Greengrass, confirming that: “I’m going to do as many movies as I can with him before they pack us away to the old folks home.” Fans of the Bourne franchise could be forgiven for taking that to mean that as long as Greengrass is up for more Bourne films, Damon’s also on board. For now though, the mere fact that Jason Bourne will be back in theatres this summer doing what he does best is worth looking forward to.
One thing about these movies is that the casts are so good. I always feel so amazed at the people we get. If we have any kind of formula, it’s hiring the very best actors we can to fill out these roles, and Alicia and Tommy Lee are two absolute heavyweights.
