Filming on Justice League Part One begins in only a matter of days, and even amidst the decidedly mixed response to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, there remains a genuine interest in seeing these titanic heroes stand side by side on the big screen. After all, though opinions vary on BvS overall, almost everyone agrees seeing DC’s Trinity (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) come together was a very exciting moment and easily a highlight of the film. Surely, Justice League can manage to top that, what with it having seven superheroes to BvS’ three.

Of those seven heroes, one that fans were certainly looking forward to see in action was Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, who like Flash and Cyborg, featured in a short video teaser during Batman V Superman. For his sequence, Aquaman is being filmed as he lurks through an underwater shipwreck, before damaging the camera and swimming away at an incredible speed. The short video is mysterious and moody, and definitely hints at Aquaman being unlike any superhero movie we’ve seen before.

Momoa even echoes that sentiment in recent comments made to ET Online, where he compares Aquaman to Iron Man in that sense, suggesting the film is a whole new approach to superheroes:

There are those who might bristle to hear Momoa compare DC’s running fish joke to the breakout star of the MCU, but he has a point. Before Jon Favreau and RDJ took a crack at him, Iron Man was by no means a hot Marvel property, and clearly Momoa is hoping that he and director James Wan can do the same for Aquaman.

“It’s just something that hasn’t been explored before. For me, it’s like Iron Man. When Iron Man came out, it was like, ‘Wow!’ We haven’t explored that character before and Robert Downey took it to a whole nother level. He’s genius and it was amazing. I loved it.”

Though, before Momoa stars in Aquaman, he must first pull duty in Justice League Part One – a film rumored to heavily feature Atlantis, the undersea nation of which Aquaman is king. And again, being that the tepid response to Batman V Superman is so unavoidable, ET asked Momoa whether or not the backlash has affected his outlook of the DCEU’s future:

As you see, the backlash surrounding Batman V Superman has done little to squash Momoa’s enthusiasm. Though, with how small his role in the film actually was, he currently has little to fear from its critics. Once more DCEU films begin releasing, however, and the full breadth of what Momoa brings to Aquaman is revealed, there will undoubtedly be much to discuss.

“Some people liked it, some people didn’t, it is what it is. I don’t get it, but I don’t really listen to what anyone says…You can’t win ’em all. And I had a ball. I loved it.

“There’s been some things here and there, but I’m stoked. There’s a lot of support from fans. There’s a big beautiful world. There’s a lot – a lot – of stuff. I feel really privileged to know that there’s a lot of big, beautiful stuff that’s going to happen. I’m excited too, for people to see the final product. And now it’s our turn – it’s Justice League time! I’ve been waiting for four years that I’ve known about it that I’ve had to keep my mouth shut. I’m super pumped to shoot it!”
