Who makes a cameo in the trailer for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot? The first trailer for Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot kicks off buzz for the film with a bang, not only re-introducing Jay and Silent Bob but showing just a portion of the star-studded cast Kevin managed to assemble for the movie.

In the footage, we learn the basic premise - that Jason Mewes’ Jay and his hetero-lifemate, Kevin Smith’s vocally challenged Bob, are going to Hollywood to stop a film studio from redoing the Bluntman and Chronic movie from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Along the way, a long line of familiar faces are shown, some hinting at wider ramifications within the View Askewniverse - Smith’s cinematic universe - while others are more there for fun.

Indeed, Smith had been talking up the amount of famous friends he managed to wrangle an appearance from, and going by this first teaser, he wasn’t kidding. Quite a lot of bona-fide Hollywood stars decided to do the Fatman a solid, creating a seriously star-studded first teaser. The following actors make a cameo in the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot trailer:

  • Matt Damon Chris Hemsworth Ben Affleck Jason Biggs James Van Der Beek David Dastmalchian Craig Robinson Joe Manganiello Melissa Benoist Fred Armisen

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck

Off the top, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are most interesting from a storytelling perspective, since both had starring roles as angels Loki and Bartleby in Smith’s 1999 rumination on Christianity, Dogma. Affleck also worked with Smith prior on 1995’s Mallrats and then again on 1997’s Chasing Amy.

Loki and Bartleby were both dead at the end of Dogma, so reprisal is unlikely on Damon’s part. But he is sitting on a church pew and reincarnation is a thing, so anything is possible. Affleck is returning to Holden McNeil from Chasing Amy, the eponymous author of the ‘Bluntman Beyond’ comics at the center of this catastrophe.

Chris Hemsworth

There was a seed of a working relationship between Smith and Marvel Studios when Smith’s screenplay for Mallrats was used for Stan Lee’s exceedingly ’90s cameo in Captain Marvel. Now, it’s plainly obvious Kevin Smith and Feige are on good terms. Not only do we get some legitimate looking Iron Man armor, Chris Hemsworth is also popping around, at least in some ghostly hologram form. Given the heavy comic book influence on the Askewniverse, the angle here might be that an Avengers-equivalent exists, and Hemsworth is once again one of the main stars.

Jason Biggs and James Van Der Beek

Despite sharing a panel together at the Comic-Con in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jason Biggs and James Van Der Beek don’t have any major credits together. Except, that is, for having both cameo’d in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back back in 2001. The ’90s icons have returned for the reboot, and they’re none too happy about it if their anti-Smith screed is anything to go by.

David Dastmalchian

Another member of the MCU, people might recognize the SWAT team-member from the start of the trailer as Kurt, the Russian-accented member of Scott Lang’s crew in the Ant-Man films. Dastmalchian here is a little less suave and heroic, though.

Craig Robinson

A frequent collaborator with Seth Rogen, Craig Robinson has had roles in This Is The End, Sausage Party, and, most importantly, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, one of Kevin Smith’s ill-fated deviations from the Askewniverse. Robinson is the judge at Jay and Silent Bob’s trial in the footage here, ready and willing to slam the hammer down on the dudesome twosome.

Joe Manganiello

Action star Joe Manganiello gets a quick look in as the hair-slicked-back security guard from the same court room scene. Manganiello’s usual role tends to involves muscles and the actor looking stern, such as the Magic Mike franchise and his appearance as Deathstroke in Justice League. Nice to see him spreading out a little.

Melissa Benoist

The CW’s Supergirl has been happily making waves as the woman of steel on network TV, but she might be about to have her Hollywood break in Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. She can be seen riding Jay’s back in the bizarre green-screen sequence towards the end of the trailer. Almost certainly embarrassing for everyone involved, but mostly Jay and Silent Bob overall.

Fred Armisen

Popular comedian Fred Armisen, co-creator of Portlandia, has one of the quieter scenes in the trailer, acting as Jay and Silent Bob’s driver. Armisen was involved in 2010’s Cop Out, a movie many consider to be Kevin Smith’s directorial low-point. Regardless of if you agree, it certainly looks like Smith is keen to reboot everyone’s credits in his work, giving them another chance to get it right.
