Fans of David Cronenberg’s 1986 The Fly have reason to be excited today. Jeff Goldblum has announced that he would want to be a part of another sequel if one ever came to fruition. A sequel to The Fly came in 1989 but neither Jeff Goldblum nor David Cronenberg was affiliated with the film.
The Fly was released in the summer of 1986 and it was met with positive reviews. The movie follows Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), who is a scientist that invents telepods which can teleport live objects as well as mutilate the tissue of the organisms. Brundle decides to take his experiments one step further and teleport himself but things don’t go according to plan. A fly was accidentally teleported with him which caused him to gain the powers of a fly. It sounds like the origin story for a superhero but things go downhill fairly quickly as his body begins to mutate and deteriorate until he is a fly-human hybrid and ends with Brundle losing his life.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Jeff Goldblum explained that he would be interested in working on a sequel to The Fly even though his character met a tragic end at the conclusion of the first film. Goldblum explains that “maybe I show up as a grandchild of the original Seth Brundle, or Seth Brundle had a brother. Had a brother that emerges in some way!” He continued by explaining that he loved working with director David Cronenberg and would enjoy being involved in a sequel if Cronenberg was attached.
Cronenberg was at one point considering writing and directing a Fly reboot but plans fell through. The director would later explain in 2012 that the film never took off because of budget issues. A Cronenberg Fly sequel never got off the ground, which is a real shame because the director is very talented and would probably be able to do something interesting with the material. 20th Century Fox is currently planning a remake, however, Goldblum might not return as Seth Brundle since Cronenberg is not attached. It’ll be fascinating to see how successful the reboot can be without the involvement of those two.
Jeff Goldblum is staying busy since he is appearing in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom next week and could potentially make a return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his character, The Grandmaster, did indeed survive the end of Infinity War (or so Goldblum says, anyway). Whether Goldblum is attached to The Fly reboot or not, we’ll keep you updated as more developments come to light.
