Jurassic World blew away the box office last year with the latest installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, to the delight of many fans. Now with the sequel on the way in 2018, the question now is if Jurassic World 2 will be making any significant additions to the cast in an effort to bolster the ranks of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Naturally, given his prominent role in the first two films, that question seems to revolve around an appearance by none other than Dr. Ian Malcolm.
With its tremendous box office success, Jurassic World reinvigorated interest in the franchise with a whole new cast of characters, while still serving as a continuation of Steven Spielberg’s first two Jurassic Park films. And although World clearly relished in tying its storyline back to the film that started it all, featuring both an appearance from B.D. Wong’s Dr. Henry Wu and a fun Easter egg showing Dr. Malcolm is still around via an appearance of his book, God Creates Dinosaurs, a brief glimpse of Goldblum’s face is simply no substitute for the real thing.
In a recent interview with Fandango, Goldblum discussed whether or not he would be open to reprise his role as Dr. Ian Malcolm in another Jurassic movie:
“I’m nothing if not open. I’m like an open-faced sandwich. My door is not always open – I took the door off. I removed the hinges from the door. I’m too open. I’m like a chicken piccata. What was I about to say? Oh yes, the two [Jurassic] movies I did with them were plenty. If I never did anything more, I’d certainly be well satisfied.”
The sequel to Jurassic World is still early in development with no director officially attached, after Colin Trevorrow was scooped up to handle things in a galaxy far, far away. And given that a new director might find room for a nostalgic Malcolm-Terrible Lizard reunion, it seems anything is possible when it comes to casting the sequel.
If Jeff Goldblum is brought on for Jurassic World 2, it would certainly please many fans, as the actor and the character of Malcolm left nearly as big an impression as the CGI dinos wreaking havoc on Isla Nublar and Sorna. And given Goldblum’s recent return to the role of David Levinson in Independence Day 2, it’s clear the actor is not adverse to sequels. With a lot of pressure to compete with Jurassic World’s billion-dollar success, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise should Amblin Entertainment and Legendary Pictures come knocking on Mr. Goldblum’s door. It’s still too early to tell if such a thing will happen, but who wouldn’t love to hear Dr. Malcolm’s laugh again?
