Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice may have left theaters, but it is still causing headaches for Warner Bros. The studio has been rethinking its approach to the DC Extended Universe in the wake of the movie’s perceived failure, with Geoff Johns put in charge of the DCEU and producer Charles Roven removed from his involvement with it.
The problems extend to the movie’s stars as well, with Ben Affleck reportedly “humiliated” with Batman V Superman’s performance. While previously none of the movie’s stars had gone so far as to badmouth it in public, that is no longer the case as one of Affleck’s costars has stepped forward to give his unflattering opinion.
While speaking to Daily Mail (via CBM), Irons discussed Batman V Superman’s poor performance, and rather than place the blame on superhero movie fatigue or a conspiracy by Disney to tank the movie, Irons placed the blame squarely on the movie itself. He also seemed optimistic that the next movie in the franchise would fix some of the problems of Batman V Superman, although it’s unclear if he was referring to Justice League or the solo Batman movie.
“Deservedly so. I mean it took £800 million, so the kicking didn’t matter but it was sort of overstuffed… It was very muddled. I think the next one will be simpler. The script is certainly a lot smaller, it’s more linear.”
Despite his open disdain for Batman V Superman, Irons is by no means trying to distance himself from the movie or its successors. In fact, he is quite happy to continue with the franchise as long as the paychecks keep coming in:
So while his interest in future Batman movies seems to be a mainly financial one, it seems that Irons will continue to be part of the DCEU for the foreseeable future. That said, the next time he shows up on set, he might find himself on the receiving end of a lecture about not biting the hand that feeds him. After all, it seems that enough people involved with Batman V Superman felt disappointed in its performance to warrant Warner Bros’ rethinking its entire approach to the DCEU, but actively contributing to the movie’s negative public image is another matter entirely.
“I’m tied into The Batman at the minute, which is nice because it’s a bit of income… Not that I need a bit of income but it’s nice to keep ticking over.”
