A new poster for Avengers: Infinity War unites the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther, but one Avenger was noticeably absent: Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. Not only was the character nowhere to be seen on the poster, but Jeremy Renner’s name was also missing from the long list of actors appearing in the film.

Serving as “the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”, Avengers: Infinity War raises the stakes ten times higher than ever by pitting Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin), whose evil plans could result in the destruction of the entire universe. Thanos and his Black Order are on the hunt for the six Infinity Stones which will provide Thanos with the omnipotence he craves. To beat him, the Avengers will have to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the very first time.

With the release of a new full-length trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel also released an official poster that showcases the sheer size of its all-star cast. Unfortunately for Hawkeye fans, Jeremy Renner was absent from both. Even Peter Dinklage, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Benecio Del Toro had their names on the poster, and these are all characters who fans would expect to only receive a small amount of screen time. What does this say about Hawkeye, one of the six original Avengers to save the world from Loki in the first movie?

Hawkeye was also missing from the first Infinity War trailer, plus the hero has barely been featured in any of the marketing for the upcoming blockbuster. To fans who haven’t kept up with the film, his absence could give the impression that Renner isn’t even in the movie. However, we know that Earth’s Mightiest Marksman does indeed have a role in the film. Infinity War is expected to do “wonderful things” for the character, who will be on “his own journey” in the movie.

The Infinity War prelude comic revealed that the character will be in retirement following the events of Captain America: Civil War. Whatever Marvel has planned for Barton in Infinity War will likely lead him to becoming the sword-wielding vigilante known as Ronin. Set photos show that Renner will be sporting his Ronin costume in Avengers 4, which means that Barton won’t resume his role as Hawkeye by the end of Infinity War. It’s possible that Renner’s absence from the trailers and posters can be explained by the idea that most of Hawkeye’s story will play out in Avengers 4 instead, and that the character will have limited screen time in Infinity War.
