Jeremy Renner is confirmed to reprise his role as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, in Anthony and Joe Russo’s untitled Avengers 4. Renner made his debut as the famous Marvel Comics archer in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor in 2011 and then reprised his role in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers in 2012 and Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. However, his appearance in the Russos’ Captain America: Civil War in 2016 changed everything. Hawkeye was imprisoned on The Raft and subsequently became a fugitive upon his escape.

Renner reprises his Marvel Cinematic Universe role for the fourth time (and for his fifth overall MCU appearance) in the Russo brothers’ 2018 film, Avengers: Infinity War. In the highly-anticipated superhero team-up film, the Earth’s mightiest heroes unite with the Guardians of the Galaxy for an ultimate showdown with the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his loyal Black Order. Thanos seeks to acquire all six Infinity Stones spread throughout the galaxy and affix them to the Infinity Gauntlet, thus making him an omnipotent and omniscient being. That requires all-hands-on-deck, which is why Hawkeye is returning to the fold to aid his fellow Avengers in defeating the alien invader.

Considering that Thanos is expected to kill at least one Avenger (or main character), many people assumed that would be Hawkeye. While that may very well happen, we now know that Jeremy Renner is still reprising his role for the fifth (and perhaps final) time in Avengers 4. Renner posted a photo on Instagram today of his silhouette while wearing the Hawkeye costume, thus confirming his involvement in the forthcoming Avengers installment. Take a look:

Marvel Studios recently snubbed Hawkeye by not including the former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Avengers: Infinity War’s first trailer. But that doesn’t mean he’s not in the movie. Renner confirmed his involvement in the upcoming sequel earlier this year and then alluded to appearing in Avengers 4 while promoting his latest film, Wind River, which also stars his fellow Avengers castmate, Elizabeth Olsen. Although Hawkeye’s background remains a mystery, for the most part, audiences might soon see the superhero finally get the character development, should he transform into Ronin in Avengers 4. If not, then let’s hope he receives a ceremonious send-off if he’s part of the MCU’s upcoming Phase 4 plans.

The Russos’ untitled Avengers 4 is scheduled to wrap production in January 2018, shortly before their next MCU film hits theaters. For now, though, audiences can look forward to Renner’s next appearance as Hawkeye in Avengers: Infinity War, due out in May 2018, before seeing him make his potentially final appearance in Avengers 4 in May 2019.
